Why a Marathon?

There is a vast amount of information available on exercise, nutrition, diet, and health. However, obesity rates and instances of health problems continue to rise at an alarming rate. People are not being moved to action. Therefore, one of Sport Society for American Health’s focuses is to provide events and incentives to motivate youth and families to be active to improve their health. The great news is that these programs are working as first time runners and athletes continue to share their success stories.

Unfortunately, the counties of Southeast Texas continue to rank among the unhealthiest areas in the country. And, obesity, especially in children, is a national crisis.
Obesity is the “new smoking”. It is a plague upon our community and our children. This negatively impacts quality of living, productivity, and health.

With our hectic lives, it can seem impossible to find the time to workout. Even for those who begin a workout program, finding the motivation to stick with the routine becomes a challenge. Exygon and Baptist Hospitals Gusher marathon, SETMA half marathon, and Kinsel Ford 5K, provides a goal for which everyone can train. This event provides a motivation to workout and to stick with the training program.
